About Susan Gainen

I have been cooking since I could pick up a mixing spoon, and was welcomed into the kitchen by my mother, Letty Gainen, who grumbled about the mess, but always cleaned up after me.

Three things to know: (1) I have a perfect taste memory for everything that I have ever eaten; (2) my favorite question is "how do they do that?" and (3) with more than 600 cookbooks, there is almost always a non-Google starting point to begin to answer the question.

I am also a painter of geometric abstract watercolors called nanoscapes, whimsical watercolor creatures called small friends, The Lost Cave Paintings of Saint Paul, and the proud proprietor of Pass the Baton, a career strategies and generation-shift consulting business.

Some of my favorite cookbooks...
